St Michael's Church
About Us
St. Michael’s warmly welcomes all and supports each person’s unique spiritual journey. Our closely knit community of faith and prayer empowers us to be Christ’s love in the world. Grounded in the rich tradition of Anglican Liturgy, we are also open to creative expressions of worship as a path toward holiness and spiritual growth. St. Michael’s actively encourages participation in all areas of worship, outreach and other aspects of its busy parish life.
In 1895 several families requested that Episcopal services be offered in the town of Milton. Those otherwise seeking services would have worshipped at St Mary’s or All Saints Churches in Dorchester, the Church of the Holy Spirit in Mattapan, or Christ Church in Quincy. St Michael’s Church was designed by Ralph Lincoln Emerson (1868-1899), who lived across the street, and built in 1898 as the first Episcopal church in Milton. In 1904, a piece of stone from the Milton Abbey in Milton Abbass, England arrived and was installed as the keystone over the inner entrance to the church. The chancel was expanded in 1916 to include a stained-glass window designed by Ralph Adams Cram.
The many opportunities for lay leadership challenge and inspire our parishioners to enter into multiple ministries, as they contribute their passions and talents while discovering new skills and spiritual gifts. Such opportunities include lay preaching, educational offerings, wide-ranging outreach programs, adult and youth choirs, and a vibrant church school. It is by the congregation’s caring support for each other, and its dedication to enriching the life of the parish through participation in its many ministries, that the strong bond of St. Michael’s community is formed and continually renewed.
It is this sense of community, identified by an overwhelming majority of parishioners as the most important quality of St. Michael’s, that brings this diverse group of Christians of all ages together, week after week, to worship, pray, sing, learn, enjoy fellowship and minister to each other and the world beyond our doors.
